For Immediate Release

Lansing, MI – O’Keefe Law, PLLC, representing the Plaintiff, Megan Valerie Moryc, a former trooper with the Michigan State Police (MSP), has filed a lawsuit in the 56th Circuit Court for Eaton County alleging egregious acts of discrimination and retaliation during her tenure with the department.

The lawsuit names the Michigan State Police as the defendant. According to the verified complaint, Ms. Moryc, a resident of Ionia County, Michigan, asserts violations of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA), detailing instances where she was subjected to systemic sexual discrimination and retaliatory actions by MSP personnel.

Among the allegations outlined in the complaint:

  • Ms. Moryc, a female trooper, endured persistent sexual discrimination from fellow officers and supervisors at the Lakeview Post.
  • Despite reporting instances of domestic and sexual assault, MSP allegedly ignored her pleas for assistance and instead launched unfounded investigations against her, including a baseless criminal perjury investigation.
  • She was allegedly passed over for career advancement opportunities and specialized training in favor of less qualified male colleagues.
  • MSP personnel, including supervisors, allegedly engaged in sexist behavior and derogatory comments, creating a hostile work environment.

The complaint further alleges that MSP’s actions were in direct violation of Ms. Moryc’s rights under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, which guarantees equal treatment and protection from discrimination in employment.Patrick William O’Keefe, attorney for Ms. Moryc, commented, “We want to send a strong message to this Michigan State Police administration that their pattern of sexual discrimination toward women within their own department will not be tolerated.”
